We believe that there is one living and true God, eternally existing in three persons: The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory; that this triune God is Sovereign of all, created all, upholds all, and governs all.
We believe in God… The Father, an infinite personal Spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power and love; that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men; that He hears and answers prayer; and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ.
We believe in Jesus Christ, God's only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles and teachings, His substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into heaven, perpetual intercession for His people and… His personal, visible return to earth.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, who came forth from the Father and the Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify, and empower for ministry all who believe in Christ; we believe the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Jesus Christ and that He is an abiding Helper, Teacher, and Guide. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit and in the exercise of all the Biblical gifts of the Spirit.
We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God, fully inspired without error in the original manuscripts, and the infallible rule of faith and practice.
We believe that all people are sinners by nature and choice and therefore, are under condemnation; that God regenerates by the Holy spirit, those who repent of their sins and confess Jesus Christ as Lord; that Jesus Christ baptizes the seeking believer with the Holy Spirit, empowering them for service.
We believe in the universal Church, the living spiritual body, of which Christ is the Head and all regenerated persons are members.
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ committed two ordinances to the Church: 1) water baptism, and 2) the Lord's Supper. We believe in baptism by immersion and communion open to all believers.
We believe in laying on of hands for the ordination of pastors, elders, and deacons, and for the receiving of gifts of the Spirit as the Holy Spirit wills.
We believe that Christ will appear in the clouds to catch away His bride, the church, in accordance with I Thessalonians 4:16-18, including all those who have fallen asleep in Christ – also known as the rapture – prior to the seven-year period described in the Book of Daniel and in the Olivet Discourse as “Jacob’s Trouble” or “The Great Tribulation.”
We believe in the personal, visible return of Christ to earth in glory and power at the conclusion of the Great Tribulation and the immediate establishment of His one-thousand-year millennial reign on earth as King of kings and Lord of lords in accordance with Revelation 20. We believe in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment and eternal blessing of the righteous and the endless suffering of the wicked at the conclusion of time and the beginning of eternity in the new heaven and earth created by Jesus Christ in accordance with Revelation 2`1.
We believe that God called and set apart a people for His own – the nation of Israel – and that we, Gentile believers in Jesus Christ, Israel’s Promised Messiah, have been grafted into the blessings and privileges of God’s divine election. We believe God will fulfill every prophecy concerning His nation including the complete salvation of “all Israel” in a single day at the end of the Great Tribulation at the revelation of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, in accordance with Romans 11.
We believe it is the obligation and mission of the Church to pray for the peace of Israel and to bless the nation with prayers for the salvation of all Jews in accordance with the promises of Genesis 12:3 and the fulfillment of Romans 11:26.

Our Sunday morning services begin with praise and worship at 10:00 AM followed by Pastor Garry's sermon. Our style of praise and worship is a blend of traditional and contemporary music led by Randy Gillespie and a live band/worship team. Pastor Garry frequently begins his sermons with a children's story targeted specifically at those under 10 years of age. The stories are designed to give children a beginner's view into the Bible teaching which follows immediately after the children's story. Sermons typically follow specific Scripture segments or books of the Bible with a "verse by verse" approach.
On most Sunday evenings, at 6:00 PM, we invite those in our community whose first language is Spanish (or those who want to learn it!) to join our good friend, Pastor Isidro Ocampo, the Pastor of Mammoth Lakes Community Church, in a time or worship and Bible Study with Pastor Isidro. Please call or text Pastor Isidro at (760) 709-1905 to confirm the meeting time and place.
Pastor's wife, Donica Harper leads a women's Bible Study on Monday mornings at 10:00 AM at the church. The current study is based on understanding God's character through the people of the Bible.
Women who work during the day are invited to attend our women's Bible study (same as the 10:00 AM teaching) except the evening study is at the home of Pastor Garry and Donica Harper at 2313 Darby Ave. in Bishop. Please call Donica at (209) 743-5526 to confirm your interest in attending the evening class.
On Wednesday evenings at 6:00 PM we meet in our fellowship hall for weekly Bible Study. This is available to all ages. We are currently studying a Survey of the Old Testament written and taught by Pastor Garry. All study materials are provided to all who attend.
Founded in 1975 and continuously sustained by generations of earnest believers in Jesus Christ, First Southern Baptist Church of Bishop, has sought to support and sustain Christ-followers through Biblical teaching and fellowship as a local Body of Christian believers. In April of 2025, our Pastor Emeritus, Tony Unger, retired from serving as our Senior Pastor. His successor is our new Senior Pastor, Garry Harper.
Our vision is to bring honor and glory to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We seek to live our lives with the understanding that we have all been saved by grace through our faith in Jesus. We are not perfect in ourselves. Instead, we have been covered by the righteousness of Christ. So our vision is to present ourselves as "sinners saved by grace," and Jesus, as the One who made that possible.
We seek to engage with people who have not yet become followers of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. God has called each of us individually and placed us in fellowship with one another for the purpose of spreading the Good News of eternal salvation. As the local “Body of Christ,” our desire is to extend the love of God to the world around us by teaching the full counsel of God (the entirety of the Bible – both Old and New Testaments).
Garry is a graduate of Evangel University, obtaining his undergraduate degree in Business Administration and his master’s degree in theological studies. After a successful business career, Garry moved from lay-leadership positions to becoming the Director of Music and Church Administration at First Southern Baptist Church of Mountain Home, Idaho beginning his service there in 2015 before taking over as Senior Pastor here at Church For The Sierras.
Garry’s wife, Donica, is a "country girl" raised right here in the High Sierras. She is a devoted Christ-follower who serves as the leader of women’s ministries leading weekly Bible study for all the women of our fellowship. She holds a master's degree in Instructional Leadership and has over 30 years' experience in education including seven years as a mentor teacher.
